On 19th September 2009, DBICA returned for its 5th glorious edition of PSA video contest, a fest to showcase some of the most impressive Public Service Announcements which came from participants all over Tamil Nadu. It is an event conducted annually by the youth to create awareness among people about specific social issues and thereby encouraging them to be more creative, compassionate and committed media producers. Veteran film makers, editors and directors from the Media grazed the occasion.
Fr. Harris, director of DBICA while welcoming the gathering, spoke about the significance of the fest, and the need for being creators with social consciousness responsibility, making the world a better place day by day. Mr.Jyothi Pandian, the national award film maker in his inaugural message spoke on how Thiruvalluvar and his Thirukkural delivers a unique code of conduct for all mankind to follow in small little couplets. He drew parallels to compare the PSAs which in a few seconds had a powerful message for the society at large.
Mr. Piero Pichi, media critic and director from Italy in his key note address stressed the need for creativity, and the need to think differently, look around with sensibility and love. Mr.K.M.
Balakrishnan, film director congratulated all the young participants for their hard work and sincere efforts and exhorted them to come up with many more thought – provoking visuals for the further advancement of the society.
Under the gazing eyes of the jury around 42 PSA’s came up for screening, after which each participant gave a brief up about their work. From messages to save water to wearing helmets, each video covered the most talked about and least bothered about issues in the society.
Finally the best PSA award went to Mr.Rajesh, for his PSA – Aaram Arivu (sixth sense) with a cash award of Rs.5000/-. Mr. Sathish Paul, won a cash award of Rs.3000/- for his PSA – Care for the Earth and Ms.Sathya Mary from Auxillum College, Katpadi for Let`s Join Hands won a cash award for Rs.2000/- All the participants were given certificates as well.
The concluding ceremony was presided over by Fr. John Peter, Joint Director – DBICA who said “Participation in an event is important than winning a Prize” and he enthused them to continue with the efforts through PSA’s to constantly proclaim to the people of their duties and responsibilities to the society.
